I've gotten at least 12 emails asking what happened with our second beta. I'm sorry to have left it so long, but I think I've just been in a daze all this time. I still don't believe it happened like this.
After receiving our first beta numbers and hearing that they were higher than expected, you'd think I'd have been prepared for beta #2, right? Not so. I headed in to the lab early and met the nurses as they were getting to work. I had another long day in court ahead of me, in a far away parish (called a county everywhere else), no less, so I needed to get on the road! Angela drew my blood and gave me her usual "Good luck" wink as I waved my way out the door. The whole time I was putting on my coat and walking to my car, all I could think was that luck was all we had at this point. Luck and hope that Gd would give us a strong growing baby with riding beta numbers.
I said a silent prayer that it would double nicely and hopped on the freeway east. My docket was so big that I didn't have the time to even think about my lab results until I stopped for water around lunch time. Of course my phone started buzzing just as I was walking into judges' chambers. I sat down and started to slip my iPhone into my suit pocket and ignore it. My judge looked at my screen as I put my phone away and with eyebrows raised asked "Isn't that important?" I pulled it out again and we both read "Fertility Lab" on the screen. "Go on!" she fussed.
I slid the answer bar and said "This is Nicole" as always. My RE's nurse sang into the receiver. "Honey, your beans are growing so well! Your beta is up to a solid 1808!" I almost fell out of the leather club chair I'd claimed across from the judge's desk. "What?" I screeched? The nurse repeated herself and said things were looking good for multiples. She asked me to come in Tuesday for an ultrasound, which is a bit early, but will help determine how many sacs we have growing. "Holy cow!" I howled. "Ok! See you Tuesday then!"
1808?! We were praying to all that is holy to get an 1100. It hadn't doubled, it more than TRIPLED! Regardless of how many beans are growing in there, they must be strong and here to stay!
"Good news?" my judge asked."Very! We're gonna be parents!" She grinned and high fived me. Yes, my judge freakishly high fived me. I asked her to keep it to herself and she nodded knowingly. We moved on to the reason I was there but smiled at one another the entire time. I finished my conference and wrapped up my day. I called the hubs for an update and listened to him yelp in surprise.
We spent dinner taking bites in between surprised exclamations and have been on cloud 9 since. I can't wait until Tuesday morning! We'll be thrilled with one, happily surprised at two, and terrified at three! For those of you following along, I'll be sure to post an update with our number as soon as I hear! Wish us luck! Let the pregnancy ride begin!
